Keller used a number of different piling techniques for the foundations of the iconic 2012 Olympic Stadium, including vibro concrete columns.
The project
The site of the 2012 Olympic Stadium was previously occupied by an industrial estate and a number of structures had to be demolished. Keller had experience of piling the site in the 1970s and 1980s and their knowledge of the ground conditions was invaluable in suggesting different treatments for different areas.
The challenge
Some obstructions potentially remained beneath the site. The ground conditions beneath the site were variable and the optimum pile type was proposed for each geotechnical or structural loading scenario.
The solution
A total of 500 vibro concrete columns were founded in the Terrace Gravels under the lighter parts of the structure around the perimeter such as staircases, signs and fire escapes.
